Pressure, cover, balance in soccer: how a back four defends together

Pressure, cover, balance in soccer: the nearest defender presses, the next covers at an angle behind, and the far side tucks in to protect the middle.

Pressure, cover, balance is how defenders in soccer work together instead of one at a time. The player nearest the ball applies pressure, the next nearest covers at an angle behind them, and the players further away tuck in to balance the shape and protect the middle. When the ball moves, the jobs move with it, so every defender needs to know all three.

Pressure, cover and balance in soccer

Pressure is the first defender's job. They close down the player on the ball, slow down as they arrive, and get side on to steer the attacker away from goal, usually toward the touchline. The aim is to stop the attacker turning, passing forward or shooting, not necessarily to win the ball straight away. The footwork is the same as in defending 1v1.

Cover is the second defender's job. They stand goal side of the presser at an angle, on the side the presser is protecting, a few yards behind. That is close enough to step in if the attacker gets past, and far enough that one touch can't beat both of them. Knowing the cover is there lets the presser get tight with more confidence.

Balance is everyone else. The players away from the ball shift across and tuck in toward the middle, so the space between the center backs and in front of goal stays closed. They leave some space on the far side on purpose: the ball has to travel a long way to get there, and the back line has time to shift back while it does.

When the first defender is beaten

The shape only works if the roles swap quickly. If the attacker gets past the presser, the cover steps up and becomes the new pressure. The beaten defender doesn't chase from behind. They recover goal side, running back toward their own goal, and become the cover. It helps if the covering defender talks, so the presser knows someone is behind them before they commit.

The same three roles sit inside every team shape, from a mid block to a high press. The play below shows them in a back four defending a wide attacker.

Step by step

The attacking team moves right, toward the defense's goal. The defense is in a 4-4-2 with D1 to D4 as the back four and D1 on the near side.

  • Step 1

O1 plays the ball down the line to O5, who is between the defense's midfield and back lines.

O1 plays the ball down the line to O5, who has found space between the defense's midfield and back line.

  • Step 2

D1, the nearest defender, presses O5 from the inside. D2 covers behind D1, and D3 and D4 shift across toward the ball.

D1, the nearest defender, presses O5 from the inside so the only way forward is down the line. D2 drops in behind D1 as cover, and D3 and D4 shift across toward the ball to keep the middle closed.

  • Step 3

O5 knocks the ball down the line past D1, straight toward D2, the covering defender.

O5 knocks the ball down the line past D1. Because D2 is already in the cover position, O5 runs toward a second defender instead of into open space.

  • Step 4

D2 steps out to pressure O5. D1 recovers goal side into the cover position behind D2.

D2 steps out to pressure O5. D1 doesn't chase from behind but recovers goal side into the cover position behind D2.

  • Step 5

The roles have swapped: D2 presses, D1 covers, and D3 and D4 hold the middle. O5 still has no way through.

    GKO1O2O3O4O5O6O7O8O9O10GKD1D2D3D4D5D6D7D8D9D10

The roles have swapped. D2 is now the pressure, D1 the cover, and D3 and D4 still hold the middle. O5 is near the corner with no clear way to goal.

To practice it, mark out a channel about 20 yards wide and play two defenders against one attacker at walking pace, then two against two. Have the defenders say who is pressing and who is covering each time the ball moves, and swap the roles whenever the attacker gets past. Once that is comfortable, add the other two defenders so the back four practices shifting across together.
