Horizontal stack: how to reset after the first pass
A horizontal stack falls apart after the first completion unless everyone knows where to go. Five steps that show how the catcher becomes a handler and a handler fills the empty lane.
The horizontal stack is another offence every Ultimate team should know. Instead of one line down the middle of the field, it puts three handlers across the back and four cutters spread across the field ahead of them. The cutters have the full width of the field to work with, and the deep space behind them is always open.
The hard part is not the first throw. It is what happens after it. The moment a lane cutter catches the disc, your neat shape is gone: one cutter is now the thrower, one lane is empty, and three handlers are standing behind the play with nothing to do. This play, Horizontal Positioning, shows the reset that keeps the offence flowing after every completion.
The shape
In a horizontal stack the seven players form two lines across the field.
- Three handlers stay back, spread across the width of the field. The middle handler usually has the disc, with one on each side for the swing.
- Four lane cutters stand in a line ahead of them, two on each side, roughly fifteen to twenty metres downfield. Each pair works together: one cuts in toward the disc while the other goes deep, so a defender can never guard both.
The rule that holds it together is simple. Always three back, always four ahead. Every time a pass is completed, someone has to move to restore that shape.

Tips
- The catcher becomes a handler. Whoever catches the pass stops being a cutter. Turn, look for the continuation, and if it is not there, wait for the handlers to reset behind you.
- The nearest handler fills the lane. The handler on the same side as the completed pass slides downfield into the empty lane. Do not send the handler from the far side across the field.
- Keep the deep cutters honest. O6 and O7 pushing deep on the far side is not wasted running. It keeps two defenders out of the play and leaves the middle of the field open.
- Count to seven. If you are not sure whether to move, check the shape: three back and four ahead. If a line is short, fill it.
Run the five steps at walking pace and call out each swap as it happens, then speed it up. A horizontal stack that resets cleanly after every pass is very hard to stop, because the defence never gets a moment when the offence is standing still.
