The Pull
Cup sets up on disk, forcing Right handed Flick. Note the stucture of the cup at this point, =>The Force (1) is taking away all throws backwards. => The axis man (2) is taking away all throws horizontally across the pitch, ie throws between 1&2 . => The third man in the cup takes away all throws diagonally forward, ie between 2&3 This is an example of a sideline trap, used when a handler receives the disk very close to the sideline we are forcing to. => There is a temporary 4th member of the cup when this happens, the openside wing (4) comes a bit closer to the cup to stop all throws up the line (Straight up the pitch) Between these 4 defenderce all options can be covered and the chance of getting a turnover from this is very high.
For the sake of simplicity I will remove the upfield players for a while
Now imagine the cup was broken, look at the position of the handlers and look ahead to where the disk will end up.
First pass
Second pass
The cup followed the disk, sounds ok but is actually wrong. If the cup had of realised that there is only one logical place to throw the disk they could have cut of the second pass between 4 & 6. This is what the cups job is. It is not just about stopping the up field passes, its about limiting the options and controlling where the disk is thrown.
So to show what I mean
The cup is broken and the cup straight away responds and cuts off the next pass, note that they spread out abit to cover all options then
They slowly close in to insure there is only one place the disk can go next
Back where we wanted it.
