----This is the basic set-up for a vertical stack (Blue=offense Red=defense). #1-5 are the "cutters" with #6/7 being the primary "handlers." ---------------------------------------------------------------------#1 is called the "anchor"position and is in charge of setting the stack where the other cutters line up behind them. They should be about 6-7 meters from the disc (#6). They also act as a third handler option. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cutting (running to get the disc) starts from the back of the stack, meaning that positions #4/5 are the primary cutters. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The dump (handler without the disc, here #7) will set up just behind the handler with the disc away from the marking defender
The back most cutter (#5) goes first. The open lanes in a vertical stack are on the right and left of the stack which are called the "open/strong" (side away from the mark and easier throw, here the right side) and "break" side (same side as the mark and more difficult throw, here the left side). If you are unfamiliar with "mark" and what the "open" and "break" sides, please look at the Marking play I posted)
There are 2 parts to a basic cut, going "deep/out" (away from the disc) and going "under/in" (towards the disc). You start going one direction and then change to the other direction.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So the cut can be either on the open or break side for the first cut. The most basic would be starting going deep (away from the disc) for about 4-10 meters (not too short but also not really far) ...
...Followed by coming back under (towards the disc)
Or you can do the same for the other side/ break side.
Fake going deep...
...Then cut back under
If the disc is not throw to you, your cut is not finished until you are back in the stack. As everyone will adjust to make space. So here #4 is now the back cutter and therefor the primary cutter.-------------------------------------------------------------- So here you can see a basic cut with 3 phases: phase 1= set-up going deep or under 4-10m phase 2= cutting back the other direction and Phase 3= returning to the stack.------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTE: you should be running during all of these Phases!!! If you are tired or confused then you can rest in the stack, that is 100% OK. BUT resting or walking in Phases 1-3 or on the open/break side destroys everyone else's ability to cut and get open.
