Primarily set up off of the pull
The basic set up looks like this, with each of the following positions: the point (2) The sides (1,3) the mids (5,6) the deep (7) and the deep deep (4)
The point (2) picks a force from the pull and gets the disc to a sideline (determined by disc position, weather conditions, player preferences...)
As the disc moves to the sideline, the person on that side (3) becomes the new mark. They force middle , NO SIDELINE! The point (2) takes away the swing, no matter what. They 'build a wall' and cut off the other half of the field. They will only give the dump if it's for a huge loss, as they don't want to make a hole in the "cup" The other side player (1) also drops back a little to help defend hammers or any other cross field throws.
If they get the dump then we adjust back to the middle and try to keep the same force, as our team is already set up on that side. Sometimes we will get broken, so the force flips. Important thing is, cut off the sideline (1) and set up the mids (5,6) immediately and the point (2) should 'build that wall' Constant flipping of the force is tough on the whole team
If they get the dump swing all the way around then the other side (1) comes up to mark the disc forcing middle, the point (2) 'builds a wall' and stops the swing, the side (3) drops back for hammers and the deep (7) shifts to the active side of the field along with the mids (5, 6)
The mids are where we want the plays to be made, so it's important we force the throws to them and the y are in the right position. Too far apart and a throw can split them.
or...
too close together and there are holes in the 'cup'
So they need to work together with the point (2) and side (1) to make a solid 4 person cup.
The goals of this defense, like most zones, is to increase the throw count and eventually they will make a mistake. Or they grow impatient and take a risky cross field throw that we are always bating them to make.
Finally when we make the play, we run some transition offense off of it, as we have been playing zone and it will take them a minute to identify who is guarding who.
Strike quick and can get an easy goal!
