Let's describe the basic set-up and goal of this Zone Defense. Bear in mind that it is most effective in bad weather conditions (wind, rain). Here we have Evo (blue) about to pull to the opposition.
Typically in ROK-U, a team facing a zone will set up like this. Red Players 1, 2, 3 are handlers. Red 4 and 5 are 'poppers', and Red 6 and 7 are 'deep' or 'wings'.
The initial set-up. [1] is the 'rabbit'. They will always follow the disc. Wherever the disc goes, they go too. [2] [3] [4] are the 'wall'. They work together to block any forward throws. [5] [6] are 'wings'. They stop throws coming over or around the wall. [7] is the 'deep'. They stop any long throws.
The rabbit [1] will prevent this throw with a strong mark.
The wall [2] [3] [4] will prevent these forward throws. They should be spread out enough to cover a wide area, but close enough together to stop anything between them.
The wings [5] [6] and the deep [7] will aggressively guard anybody in their areas, and compete for anything that gets thrown over the wall.
We give up this throw. We present this sideways throw as the easiest option by leaving it open.
Once the Red team take this throw, the wall and rabbit must quickly reposition to 'trap' the disc.
The rabbit [1] will now prevent any return throw to Red 1. Wall [3] [4] will still prevent any forward throws, in particular [4] must stop straight throws up the line. Wall [2] will circle around to prevent throws across the field. Wing [5] will play closer to the sideline, and [6] will be very active to prevent longer sideways passes.
If the Red team makes a throw, the zone must quickly reposition and start again.
The Zone angles slightly, but does not 'trap' the disc.
This sidewas throw is always encouraged, and we aim to create another 'trap' situation.
Always quickly set up this basic position when the disc moves.
If the Red team do make throws over, through or around the Wall, everyone must hurry to reposition.
Getting into the intiail set-up quickly makes us strong.
