  3. Step 3

Center of the Field: Forcing Flick Handler D3 - The open side man (3) guards tight to his man, stopping the easy swing or an upfield cut, allowing the dump for a loss of yrd. Handler D1 - The off side handler D (1) slides in to the forward throwing lane. His role is to cut off straight upfield throws, as well as any sort of inside out break throw. Handler D2 - The mark here (2) has to both put on a good mark, as well as stop the break side swing (to handler 1). In the former, he is helped by defender 1. The latter is the most important goal, if they break this semi-cup, they have 3 seconds of wide open throws. The combined mark of 1&2 should force the disc to the open side - to handler #3. Cutter D - The upfield defenders should focus on bracketing their men, working in pairs corresponding to the left and right halves of the field. The goal here is to pinch toward the lane that the cup creates when guarding the in-cuts, and to spread a little wider guarding the deeps, because a huck should only result from a fast swing to either handler #1 or #3.

  4. Step 4

Trap Side: Forcing Flick Moving to this side of the field, the handler D will shift over. 3 is going to mark his man, put 2 will leave his in order to form that two man cup. 1 shifts to the closest handler, again stopping the dump-swing. Upfield, the goal of the defender closest to the sideline is to stop any throw up that sideline. His paired defender should be prepared to help him deep. The farthest upfield defender, 4, opposite from the disc, should also be ready to streak deep if a huck goes up. The other defender, 5, should be watching for hammers to both his man, as well as the opposite side handler (#1).

  5. Step 5

Weak Side: Forcing Flick When the disc is on this side of the field, the basic idea is to force it to the right, so that less space is available for the offense. Handler D - the basic idea of handler D here is quite simple. Defender 1 should mark his man well, shading a little to that backhand side, but mostly straight up. Defenders 2 and 3 on the other handles should focus on poaching those lanes as best they can, while still being able to get a mark on quickly in event of a swing. Up field defense should focus on being tight, especially those on the same side of the field as the disc (#s 4&5). There is little help defense on this side of the field.

  6. Step 6

So lets say there is a swing. 5 goes deep, catching his man off guard. Defender 4 gives some help D, to shut down the look. D1 hustles to get the junk set, and D3 focuses on shutting off some upfield looks for a second or two as he gets to his man.

  7. Step 7

    Disc up.

  8. Step 8

As you react to the long upfield throw, focus on a good man defense. The poach opportunities emerge from a more static situation.

  9. Step 9

Again, the off-mark handler D should think about poaching some of those lanes when the disc is on the wrong side of the field.

  10. Step 10

Force the disc to a more favorable position and re establish the junk set.
