More defensive switches and help concepts. Most often, our defensive help will come from the back side.
The pass goes to the wing. Normally, the playside $ must come up to take away short passes down the line. Unfortunately, the playside $ was forced to drop to keep with a deep threat. Someone else must take over his/her responsibility to take away short passes down the line
It won't be C or A, they proceed normally
it won't be the deep or playside safety
It has to be D
Because D has picked up new responsibilities, someone else must "help" to take up his/her responsibilities. The help comes form the backside $
We'll put a full offense on now
2 safeties are held back by 2 deep receivers. B should cheat over to give backside help as much as possible.
Our weakest point is a pass over D. We're betting their handler can't make that difficult pass consistently.
If we're lucky, receivers will move into the "dead space" where we don't cover them and free up some of our defenders
We let 5 go, the deep safety picks up the only deep threat, and the playside $ now assumes the deep safety's normal responsibilities, helping D over the top
Reset
Consider this scenario. We forced the disc to the wing and have engaged our trap, but the deep safety is too deep to give over-the-top support to the playside $
We want to bring help from the backside. B and the backside $ are on the backside. As far as they are able to, these 2 backside defenders cheat over and "bump" D into the deep safety's normal spot. Recall that our mark is forcing line. This is crucial to cutting off the backside half of the field and allowing us to cheat over
Once again, the philosophy of our zone is to force the disc to one half of the field. We cut off the backside half. We take away the short pass to the playside. If we can, we have help over the top on the playside. We accomplish this by rotating help over from the backside, which is protected by distance (we forced the disc to the edge) and by our mark (the mark forces line). The backside help bumps the playside defenders into position, so that we can have a defender taking away the short playside pass, a defender covering the line over the top, and still have defenders guarding the interior of our diamond.
