The following are times when we should "switch" in this defense
A switch is when 2 players exchange responsibilities with each other
If we get beat inside our diamond, and the receiver is closer to D than to A, A and D will switch
The rest of the defense shifts backwards accordingly
If we get beat inside our diamond, and the receiver is closer to A than to D, A & D DO NOT switch
The defense shifts backwards normally
Anytime the offense completes a pass outside of B or C . . .
We proceed to the trap as normal
If we give up a pass on the wing, and the receiver is closer to $ than to B/C . . .
$ and B/C will switch. The rest of the defense shifts backwards normally
If we ever get beat in the middle of the field behind our diamond . . .
Abandon the zone and switch to man
Anytime the disc is centered and the offense is close enough to score from the wings, we have to switch to man
The point of our diamond trap zone is to give up ground vertically to force the disc where we want it (on the edges) horizontally. Having horizontal position doesn't help us out any if the offense is in the endzone though
Here's what happens if we try to continue running our zone on the goal line . . .
The space we give up on the wings is enough to afford the offense a touchdown
So if the offense is close enough to score from the wings against our diamond trap zone
We switch to man
This does not apply if the receiver approaches the goal line from the wings
As long as we don't give up a touchdown, we are always delighted to force a pass to the wing from this zone
We proceed to trap as normal - and the trap is even more effective in the confined space near the goal line
