pull
The offense has set up in a vertical, and we (the defense) are setting up in our initial positions for JUNK 1 is the initial mark and will force backhand. 2 and 3 will "Cup" on either side forcing the handler to swing wide or dump. 4 and 5 will actually be facing the cutters in the stack, rather than the handler and the cup - they will essentially "man" the cutters as they come into the lane which you will see in the next step. 6 and 7 are monsters and will prevent deep throws. 1-5 are called "Mugs" 6-7 are called "Monsters"
the offense cuts from the back down the left lane, so 5 "mans up" and cuts off the cutter
when the vertical stack cycles, 5 returns to the initial position. At the same time, the offense cuts in the opposite lane and 4 "mans" up and cuts off the cutter
Now lets see when they dump.
In this case, 1-3 are in the best position to cup - but it will not be important for them to maintain their relative position. You can see that 2 has taken the mark position while 1 and 3 fell in on either side to again force the swing or dump.
Now lets say the disc is advanced up field
unlike a traditional cup, we will not attempt to move the cup as a unit. Rather we will position on the fly using the nearest defenders. In this case, 4 will immediately mark. 1 and 5 are furthest upfield, they will take on the cutters. 2 and 3 will form both sides of the cup. note the positions taken by 2 and 3, they are again forcing the handlers to swing and dump,
When the disc advances along either side, the monster on that side 6 moves up to clog the lane while 7 moves to the top.
2 is closest, so 2 will mark 1 and 5 are furthest up field so they will take on the cutters. 4 and 3 fall in on either side of the mark to trap on the sideline. 6 and 7 can return to their initial positions.
Our goal is to force a turnover in the lanes, and force them to settle for wide swings and dumps. Here they will manage to center and reset You can see that this has opened up the field for the offense and 5 must make a decision to either mark or manage the lane.
It is easiest to defend the lane first, and will do the best job of stopping the offense from advancing further. 1 and 5 stay in the lane. 3, 2, and 4 reform the cup.
When the offense becomes impatient they will force throws over/through our cup and into our divers who are "man up" on the cutters.
