Let's begin with the disc trapped on the Open Sideline. This is our weakest starting position. The nearest stack should start further downfield, and the handlers should spread across the field at the level of the disc. The defense should find it easy to stop throws to cutters downfield.
A handler can make an up-the-line strike and receive the disc.
The handler should have momentum and position on their defender. They can look for a downfield throw if it's available.
Let's assume this throw isn't available. Now we are back in our starting position. This is not good.
This time, the middle handler will start to make the same up-line cut as before, with the far-side handler moving in to take their place.
The first handler instead cuts back for a wide-angle dump, while the far-side handler make the up-the-line cut. This gives the thrower two throwing options.
This time, the thrower makes the wide dump.
On their way back to establishing position, a break throw might be possible, either to the returning handler or to a cutter.
We now have the disc back in a strong, central position.
