Step by step 14 steps
  1. Step 1

With the disc in the centre of the field we would tend to set up a vertical stack in line with the disc, with equal amounts of space to either side. The advantage of this position is the usable amounts of space to both the open and the break side. The disadtantage is that you limit the number of continuation passes upfield is usually limited by the sideline. By shifting the stack, you change the amount of space on each side, and alter the emphasis of your offense.

  2. Step 2

By shifting the stack into the break side, you maximise the open side space, leaving your cutters plenty of space to work and advance upfield, at the expense of limited options in the break side.

  3. Step 3

The emphasis here is on your strong cutters to get free in the large green space in the open side. Back of stack has three open side options; deep...

and under inside. No one of these options alone is an easy cut, but by maximising the number of options available you make the job harder for the defense. The defense must respect the long threat, or the cutters from the back will have a much harder time getting free under. Cutters in this position should be some of your strongest.

  8. Step 8

The advantage of the shifted stack here is that after the initial cut, there is a greater amount of space available for continuations before coming stack on the sideline.

  9. Step 9

By shifting the stack into the open side, you maximise the amount of space on the break side. This has two main advantages. There is more space for the inside break to your upfield cutters, making this throw easier in most conditions.

  10. Step 10

The second main advantage is the increased free space in the break side for easy continuation cuts.

  11. Step 11

Quick throws from your cutters allow several passes before running into the sideline.

  12. Step 12

It also creates good long shot opportunities to the endzone. With the defender chasing the break side cut on no. 5 they have a chance to get the throw out before the force is set, or at least sell them with a convincing huck fake.
