Explanation of our clam zone defense. This is the basic initial set up from the brick point. Defenders are in red.
The Cup (1,2,3) prevent any throws up field while the disc is with the center handler. Cup 2 & 3 poaches in the throwing lanes and allows the swing. The wing defenders (5,6) plays back to prevent hammers and scoobers.
When the disc is swung, the cup defender on the side of the disc must rush to force the disc back to the middle. Middle cup (2) will prevent dump pass. Far cup (1) poaches and readies for cross field hammers.
Short mid prevents any poppers plus up line cuts from handlers
With the short mid drawn so close to the disc. The wing defenders (5,6) must cover a bigger area. The two will have to cover the middle of the field. Deep (7) will need to watch out for desperation hucks or big hammers.
If a big cross field swing happens, defender 1 must rush to force middle or else the zone will fall apart.
There's a chance the short mid (4) won't be fast enough to keep up with a cross field swing. Players must communicate to tell Cup 2 to poach in lane, or tell wing player to stay closer to the middle until he can catch up.
Once 4 is caught up, 2 goes back to her area. 3 can pinch in to help prevent poppers. 5 drops back to prevent hammers.
