Step by step 17 steps
  1. Step 1

The play is set up with three flat handlers, and 4 cutters in a horizontal stack accros the pitch. This creates large areas of clean space between the disc and the cutters, and upfield behind the stack. From this position, anyone of the cutters in a position to make a deep cut or an under cut at any time. This presents a greater challenge to defenders as it is less predictable which way the cutters are looking to receive the disc.

  2. Step 2

The cutters operate in pairs. There are THREE pairs in the stack. 1 and 2, 2 and 3, and 3 and 4. When the disc comes into play after a turnover or stoppage, the active pair is determined by the position of the handler who picks up the disc. In this case, the disc in the middle and the force is left or forehand.

  3. Step 3

When the middle pair is active cutters have the most options. Cutters 2 and 3 spread wide to have maximum room to cut. Cutters 3 and 4 stay tight to the sidelines, their primary job at this stage is to keep their defender engaged on them.

  4. Step 4

The open side cutter (no. 3) intiates the cut. At this point he has three options (ignoring the influence of the defense for now). He can cut under on the open side...

    (reset)

    ...under on the break...

    (reset)

  8. Step 8

...or deep. No defender will be able to take away all three options. From this position you have more options than a sideline pair because fromt the sideline cutters can only effectively cut to one side. This reduces the number possible options the defense has to mark out. The middle is the power position of this offense.

  9. Step 9

Back in the original horizontal stack position, while the open side cutter initiates, the break side cutter does the opposite cut. In this example, cutter no 3 is going to go under to the break side. His partner will respond by going away, but only for a short distance.

  10. Step 10

This allows cutter number to to set up a cut from up field, a chance to lose their defender and gain yards. This cut is also easier for the handler to throw to as it is on the open side.

  11. Step 11

Cutter number 2 who started running away comes under on the open side and takes the disc. His partner is running long for a middle distance huck.

  12. Step 12

If he can't take the huck, the cutter can reset to a handler, who can either make the huck to the cutter already gone, or hold the disc and let the stack reset.

  13. Step 13

Now we are back where we started, having gained some hard, with the disc on the sideline handler. The process is repeated but the side pair is active.

  14. Step 14

In this example the same thing happens, but rather than hold and reset, the break side cutter throws the huck instead of dumping to a handler.
