Base setup with shutdown offense player (blue #1) in the handler set. The shutdown defender (red #1) works to prevent blue #1 from getting the disc. The shutdown defender should be able to prevent the impact player from getting the disc because they don't have to worry about guarding them if they go deep (since red #7--the deep deep is in position to help), so blue #1 only has to guard cuts in the handler space and in-cuts back toward the disc. Red #2 is all-time mark in the cup and always forces one direction (righty flick in this example). Red #3 is the one point defender in the cup and has two responsibilities: (1) preventing throws between themselves and the mark, and (2) staying alert for "crash" calls (which means they need to aggressively get their body between an offensive player trying to intrude into the cup and the thrower). The force side wall defender (red #4) is responsible for guarding the downfield cutter closest to the force sideline--by staying fairly "tight" on that cutter while maintaining positioning to defend in-cuts toward the disc (the deep-deep is able to guard any away cuts). The middle of the wall (blue #5) defends the second closest cutter to the force sideline--also by staying fairly "tight" on that cutter while maintaining positioning to defend in-cuts toward the disc (again, knowing that the deep-deep is able to guard any away cuts). The break side wall defender comes across as far as is needed to defend any potential third cutter threat. Typically they will not worry about going all the way over to the break sideline to defend an unrealistically long cross field throw. If the deep-deep has multiple deep cutter threats they may coordinate with the off-side wall defender to ensure both deep and mid-range hucks can be defended. If the shutdown player has moved downfield such that red #1 is effectively available as another defender in the wall, then the off-side wall defender may also elect to "blitz" in on an otherwise unguarded break side handler to discourage a cross-field swing pass.
