Format: 2 defenders (1&2) forcing handlers middle. One handler is marking and the other is guarding the force-side. The “wall” (players 4-3-5) setup about 8-10 yards behind the markers (1&2), with the 3 a few steps in front of the wings (4&5). The “short deep” (6) patrols behind the wall, guarding against anything over the top. The “deep deep” (7) plays the traditional role of the deep, but is aligned opposite from the “short deep” (6).
The job of 3 is to cut off passes into the middle of the zone. The wings (4&5) pinch towards 3 slightly to help cutoff throws, but their primary job is to prevent throws up the sideline if the disc swings to either side. The “short deep” (6) patrols behind the wall, guarding against anything over the top.
The defense moves in response to the cutters.
If the disc swings to the other chaser (2), this player now marks the disc while player 1 covers the dump. The rest of the team shifts in response. Note: The chaser (1) does not have to prevent the throw back to the middle. Staying near or "behind" the middle handler discourages the big swing across the field.
If a big swing happens and the disc makes it across the field to the break side handler, the team shifts to cover. We will always force middle, unless a handler with the disc traps themselves within a few feet of the sideline. Then the person marking switches (temporarily) to a sideline force.
