Step by step 9 steps
  1. Step 1

This is the basic setup. Look at the description to see what the jobs of the different defenders are.

  2. Step 2

When O4 or O5 move to the thrower the middle, D3, will adjust staying in front. If both move. It is D2 responsibility to shift against the second cutter. Also, D5 must pay attention and not let O7 take the open space created by 2 shifting. Once this is done it is up to D5 to prevent the around throw. The main priority for D5 is the wing then the swing. D7 should be communicating with 5 on when O7 is coming. Three must be communicating with O2 to tell them to shift.

  3. Step 3

If the disc is swung to the handlers the zone must adjust and continue to force middle. Everyone should shift closer to the disc but still be ready for a big around throw. D5 is mainly looking to stop the side line throw but will adjust to stop any inside break throws and not allow O7 or O5 from getting in front of them. D7 pinches in to help congest the lane. If O7 is deep then D7 will follow as if they are playing man. D4 will also pinch in towards the middle to congest the lane but they must be positioned to contest the big swing to O2.

  4. Step 4

If the disc is moved up field the zone must run past the disc and focus on containing the throw to the middle and set up. They cannot set a mark immediately and must look downfield to take the immediate threat. If the wings or middle are confused on where to be the general rule is for D4 to be on the left shoulder of D1. The middle must be between the two marks. D5 must be right shoulder of D2

  5. Step 5

If a chisel is attempted it is up to either D1 or D2 to stop it. The main look is for D2 to crash and pressure the throw but D1 can as well. Note: when D2 crashes, D5 must be ready incase any cutter like the wing try to cut to the space that was opened by the movement of D2

  6. Step 6

As the disc is swung keep forcing middle and switch who is marking and who isn't. The offense might try to continue to swing the disc until the marks get tired and let up. Therefore, it is up to the wings to challenge the swings and to make it harder for those throws.

  7. Step 7

The Zone will always let the handlers dump the disc. If they set an L dump to swing the disc D5 should let it happen. The main priority is to stop the big swing that gives the offense better positioning.

  8. Step 8

If the offense has four handlers the zone will not alter too much. D4 and D5 will have to be very active in preventing any upfield swings. D3 main priority is to stop O5 and to congest the lane to help stop O6 and O7 from getting the disc.
