Run when offense is playing a side or split stack and expecting matchup defense. #1 red is "left", #2 red is "middle", #4 red is right, #3 is last back and #5, #6, #7 are covering handlers or front of the stack. #1, and #2 are responsible for defending the vertical space underneath cutters. #1 should take the left most offensive player that is a threat, #2 the 2nd, and #4 should be ready to pickup a fill cutter coming out of the dead space most defenders should have their shoulders squared up to the middle of the field, roughly where #2 is. #2 being the exception who is forced to face towards the deep space to be ready to pickup cutters coming out of either lane into their space
watching #1 and #2 follow their matchups
watching #1 and #2 follow their matchups
one of the first switches is when two offensive players switch relative horizontal positions while in the same vertical level, here the left and middle defenders should just let the new cutter come to them
but if the offensive players are not in the same vertical level, the left and middle won't be able to easily switch matchups
here a blade to #1 on blue or the inside flick to #2 are both suddenly open if the defense tries to switch matchups
instead...
the left and middle should switch lanes ("slide") and communicate that they are sticking with matchups through the horizontal movement
resetting to original positions - not actual movement
In this set, the "left" should take the left-most threat, so if the offense sweeps out of the space, we don't want to just be guarding empty space, we want to encourage the offense to keep trying matchup style offense.
we don't need to follow all the way, but we don't want to just start watching the disc and playing the space
as cutters come out of the dead space, we pick them up with our same relative positions regardless of what matchups changed
