Step by step 17 steps
  1. Step 1

This is the generic set up for the zone. Blue is offense, Red is defense. Red 1 and Red 2 are the cup, their responsibilities include Blue 2 and Blue 3. Their goal is to cut off throws level with the disc and throws with in 5 yards in front of them. The goal of this zone is to force them to throw backwards or straight into the majority of our team.

  2. Step 2

if the disc swings to the flick sideline, the force is still middle but Red 3 (one of our mids) inches closer to the far side handler while Red 4 (our other mid) takes up as much of the open side land. On the sideline the mark can be a little more straight up to prevent a big throw but we don't want him to overcommit and be broken to the outside. The point here is to shrink the angles they have and make them force throws into our mids and wings

  3. Step 3

If the disc is on the break sideline our goal is to get it back to the force sideline. So our wings and mids are going to be really taking away the upfield options, it is not their job to contest the throw to the force side handler

  4. Step 4

The throws that will beat this cup are ones with lots of O/I, I/O edge so we need to press our 5-4 in front of the disc advantage

  6. Step 6

To press the man advantage, our wings and mids need to keeping an eye behind them. Remember as a wing or a mid, your responsibilty is the players 5-10 yards from the disc and further. When Blue 4 makes a cut into the cup, Red 3 NEEDS to stay tight on him. While this happens Red 6 ( one of our wings) needs to look behind him and more than likely pinch into the middle to prevent the thrower from bombing it past us.

  8. Step 8

If the disc does get past the wall (which will eventually happen) it is NOT the wall's (Red 3, 4, 5, and 6) responsibility to pick up the mark. Their responsibility is to continue to look upfield and cut off continuations. Assuming a cutter (like Blue 4) catches the disc behind our wall, it's not a 5 v 3 in favor of our defense. Trust the cup to regain position

  10. Step 10

The Deep is responsible for calling for help from his wings and telling wings to pinch in or come back. If Blue 7 comes running in, Red 5 (one of our wings) needs to come in with him. When that happens, Red 7 and Red 6 need to adjust and try to take up the space that Red 5 just left.

  11. Step 11

If the opposing team inches forward and doesn't string 4+ throws through the zone, we need to stay with it through the endzone. If we are in this situation, our mids and wings are denying unders to the team. Let him run you over and call a foul but do not get beat to the line/cone. Trust our deep to cut off anything that goes over your head.

  12. Step 12

Red 2 (our backhand side mark) and Red 3 (one of our mids) are preventing this throw by pinching in

  14. Step 14

    Like this

  15. Step 15

Most teams have a vertical offense near the endzone

    12456712345673
  16. Step 16

Against a vert stack, Red 1 is more into the open side lane. He is still able to contest swings but is more likely to give them up as long as they don't gain yards

    12456712345673
  17. Step 17

The endzone defense here looks similar to our regular zone defense but our mids are standing in-line with the front of their stack taking away cuts to the goal line.
