Step by step 15 steps
  1. Step 1

From the pull the defense (red) is going to run down and set up in a formation similar to this. R1, and R2 are the marks, they are setting up a two person cup trying to force throws into the middle of the field. They are going to force middle and take turns marking depending on which side of the field the disc is on. While they are not marking they will be preventing easy cross field throws (in this case R2 is blocking the throw to B7) and threatening the dumps when possible without overcommitting. We are okay with allowing lots of throws between 1, 2, and 3 as long as they aren't gaining many yards.

  2. Step 2

R3, R4, R5, and R6 form the "Diamond" this zone gets its name from. R3 and R5 will be listening to R7 and staying with the widest offensive cutters. Throws to these cutters should be very hard and the presence of any defender in the area should be enough to discourage them. R4 and R6 are the front and the back of the diamond. They are going to be heavily communicating with one another to pressure every in cut to the middle of the field that the markers are trying to force. Ideally we are setting up R4 or R6 to make plays in this formation.

  3. Step 3

The diamond will often end up some what flat (spread across the field) or shallow (close to the handlers) depending on the position of the cutters.

  4. Step 4

Starting here I will show typical movement as the offense progresses.

    12345671234567
  5. Step 5

R4 sticks the first cut from B6, R6 stays with B5. R7 closes in and the other defenders they can play a little under because there are no deep threats.

    12345671234567
  6. Step 6

R4 lets B6 leave, R6 passes B5 on to R4 as they cut in.

    12345671234567
  7. Step 7

If R4 can stop the next option to B5 a dump / swing will be necessary

    12345671234567
  8. Step 8

If the disc swings closer to R2 they will start marking back towards the middle.

    12345671234567
  9. Step 9

Short passes like these between handlers will be common. Sometimes R1 and R2 will be able to punish these passes, quite often though the pressure alone will be enough to cause a handler to bobble a pass .

    12345671234567
  10. Step 10

Oh no a big break swing! No problem, all cutters are being marked by defenders. (R1 should spring to get the mark on as quickly as possible. R2 will watch for but not overcommit for return passes back to B2 or B3)

    12345671234567
  11. Step 11

Again we are forcing middle. B2 might be an easy throw for the offense to make. But given enough throws they will make a mistake.

    12345671234567
  12. Step 12

We want to be mindful of multiple cutters going deep past the diamond. R7 should be on the deepest cutter and communicating to the closest diamond player (probably a wing) when they need help.

  13. Step 13

And a return to a more natural shape. (Notice R1 prevents the return pass to B1 and R2 prevents the swing pass to B3, leaving the middle of field as the only viable option)
