Step by step 11 steps
  1. Step 1

Horizontal Stack Formation. 1 & 4 cutters play a little shallow. 2 & 3 leave the middle of the field open.

  2. Step 2

Option A: 1 initiates across the field and to the disc. 2 & 3 clear break side. 4 clears to the middle of the field and sets up a cut for a continue.

  3. Step 3

My preference is that 4 books it deep. Usually his defender will be caught trailing and not making sure to position himself to take away the deep space.

  5. Step 5

4 has the option to come under.

  6. Step 6

Continuation is to 3 pushing up field. 3 can either cut deep (shown) or cut under.

  8. Step 8

Option B: 4 initiates across the field and to the disc. 2 & 3 clear open side. 1 clears to the middle of the field and sets up a cut for a continue. This is pretty atypical as it is seemingly "against the grain". It requires confident handlers to throw a flat throw to the 4 initiation cut. Initiating from the 4 is more difficult but if the opponent is keyed in on Option A, this is a counter. When an opponent assumes you're coming with Option A, they will try a flatter mark which we can break to the 4. The 4 defender will also try to shade deep anticipating the 4 going deep. And the 1 defender will shade hard under, opening up the deep once the 1 cutter reaches the middle of the field on the clear.

  9. Step 9

1 then cuts deep. Ideally 4 would get a backhand huck off before the mark is set.

  11. Step 11

I'm not going to go through the entire cutting progression. If you noticed, Option A looks like a side stack after the initiation. It looks like a side stack because it is a side stack at this point. Option A cutting progression follows as a side stack after initiation. Option B cutting progression also follows a side stack but its design is to punish the mark and downfield defenders with break throws. Advanced Ho Stacks are pretty much a side stack so when in doubt just act as a side stack. The ho stack might break down a bit or the side stack might blend into a more traditional ho stack but just play ultimate. Keep the throwing lane open, attack the cutting block (throwing lane), and clear to the sidelines.
