Cup is forcing the handlers to throw laterally..
As the handlers complete short lateral passes, the cup needs to run to chase the disc
The apex handler's job is to move the disc to both sides of the field, thus forcing the cup to run the width of the field numerous times
The side handlers will have 1 or 2 seconds to try an upfield throw before the cup can setup and force them to throw back to the apex handler
If there is no good up field throw, the side handlers return the disc to the apex handler. As the cup runs from side to side, holes will begin to develop in their coverage
The center handler can return the disc to the same side it was received from, forcing the cup go do a full stoppage and run in the opposite direction
returning to center....
A lot of the up field movement will come from throws to the side handlers and cuts developing along that side of the field
the deep cutter (R6) cuts in along the sideline and hopes to gain a lot of yards from the brief opening gained before the wing catches up to the side handler
If there is no continuation cut after the deep receives the disc, they should allow the cup to setup and then turn around and return the disc to the handler.
the side handler returns the disc to apex who proceeds to swing it to the far side, probably laughing at the misfortune of the cup having to run to the far side
The deep cutter in this side (B7) now cuts to the side line to get the pass from the side handler before the cup can catch up.
with no continuation cut, the deep on that side returns the disc to the side handler
resetting to the middle...
coordination of cuts between the poppers (B4 + B5) and the deeps (B6 + B7) produces continuation cuts and makes jail breaks possible
As the disc moves to the left side, B6 cuts into the sideline which draws the attention of the wing defensive player (R5). R5 moves to cut off the throw to B6 which opens up space for the popper B4 to get the disc from the side handler.
At this point you've gotten the disc behind the cup and short-deep and you have the opportunity to gain a lot of yards before they can catch up.
The deep cutter (B6 + b7) coordinate to draw the deep-deep defender to opposite sides of the field, removing him from being able to make a play on the disc.
With the deep - deep running between the two deep cutters, the poppers can move the disc up field with the free deep while the cup and short-deep are desperately trying to catch up
Often as soon as the jail break starts and it's clear the cup will not catch up OR if the offense manages to get within 20 yards of the end zone, the defense will switch to man. That's because the zone really breaks down close to the endzone and the offense can usually punch it in.
