This is the basic setup for the zone defense. The surrounds the person with the disc and forces them to throw to a particular side of the field. A single person marks the disc (R3) and the other members of the cup (R1 & R2) need to be 3M (10 ft) away from the disc, but must still prevent any throws from going between them. The short deep (R6) will communicate with the cup and tell them where there are holes that need to be plugged and if a popper is crashing into the cup. The short-deep (R6) . The wings (R4 & R5) make sure that no yardage is gained down the sidelines when the disc is swung to that side of the field. Additionally they serve as hammer stops when the disc is on the opposite side of the field. The deep-deep (R7) will cover any offense player that is cutting deep and will communicate to the wings and short-deep if they need help.

The short-deep (R6) will setup behind the cup and plug any holes that are present in the cup. Additionally the short-deep will defend anything thrown over the cup to poppers in the middle. When the disc is thrown to another handler, the cup moves laterally first to prevent the throw up the middle of the field. R3 runs hard to the side to prevent any upfield throws on that side, R1 comes in and marks the disc. The cup allows the handlers to throw to other handlers but never up the to the middle of the field.

The handlers will try and throw throw through the cup and fail
the handlers will try and throw it OVER the cup and be D'd by the short deep
The side handler will try and move it up the line to the side cutter, and be D'd by the wing defender
The far side wing stops any hammers being thrown to the opposite side of the field
the deep-deep covers any deep shots
The deep-deep also has responsibility to go after any high and floaty throws that might carry over the short-deep and wings.
