The disc is pulled and the D runs down to stop the first throw.
The mark is established forcing a sideline. All players establish a strong position to cut off under cuts. The defender marking cutter 7 poaches deep lining up on the shoulder of the person marking the disc. The handlers on the break side poach into the lanes, but are ready to jump on the mark if a break happens.
When the disc is swung the D adjusts by sliding D7 even with the mark, and the D on the open side handler forces the handler to make an up field cut into the other defenders.
If cutter 7 realizes the poach and cuts cross field. D7 must get back to that person. D7 does this by beating the cutter to the place the cutter is going. D6 can help out initially but should not stop playing D on cutter 6.
D7 has successfully stopped the cross field cut.
D7 has to clear out. D6 realizes that he/she is now last back and adjusts.
If one of the other remaining cutters cuts deep. The last back picks that person up for as long as it takes his/her cutter to catch up.
D5 is now last back and D6 goes to cover his/her defender's under cut.
If the huck goes off D5 is there to lend a hand for a two on one.
If the cuts come from a player of the same gender a switch can be made so both defenders can conserve energy.
A successful switch where the D has played heads up and recognized the advantage early allows the D to rest while the offense wastes energy getting open.
The D is made.
