Red: 1 is the mark. They must play a hard mark so that the offense cannot break them. 2 is on 1's hip, slightly behind in order to block the throwing lane and keep the thrower from throwing to the handler behind them. 3 is on the hip of 2 and is blocking the diagonal, up-field throw. 4 is on the hip of 3 and is lined up almost directly in front of the thrower. This blocks the up field throwing lane. The cup (just like 3 man cup) leaves one handler free to receive the disc, this is to trap the thrower and the offense on the side line.
Red: 5 and 6 are the corners. 5 is responsible for the area behind 3 and anyone or disc that comes into the area is theirs.
Red: 6 is responsible for the area on the other side of the field. If the disc is thrown to the open handler, 6 only attacks the disc if 6 is 99% confident that they can reach the disc before the other handler. What is most important is stopping the continuation (stop the bleeding) by back pedaling with arms out to cover the cutters in the area in front of the side handler.
Red: 7 is the deep and is responsible for the back field and any players or disc that come into the area behind the corners.
If more than one cutter streaks deep to split the deep (7), 7 must call back the closer corner to help cover the space.
