Here's the basic setup. We are blue. 1, 2, and 3 form the cup. 4 is the 'short-deep'. 7 is the 'deep-deep'. 5 and 6 are the 'wings'.
The cup follows the disc as it is swung.
1 is the mark. 1 actually stalls the thrower and prevents swings. We will usually force forehand.
2 is the 'top'. Because 2 is directly upfield of the mark, or on top of them. 3 is the 'off'. Because 3 is off to the side of the other two.
Each person in the cup is responsible for blocking the OPEN SPACE TO THEIR RIGHT. 3 blocks the space between 3+2. 2 blocks the space between 2+1. 1 blocks behind the thrower.
4, the 'short-deep', is responsible for dealing with the cutters in the middle of their hostack. Feel free to get physical--by this I mean get in their cutters' way. Nothing illegal about that.
example
7 is the 'deep-deep'. Someone who will always be the last back behind their deep cutters. Needs to communicate with the 'wings' about who is defending who.
example
Lastly, 5 and 6 are the 'wings'. They stay IN FRONT OF the opponents outside cutters to prevent their in-cuts. Wings should never be behind the outside cutters, that's what the deep-deep is for.
That's about it. Keep watching for a longer example of how it works.
