The general strategy with this defense is to force the handlers to throw an under to the middle of the field.
Defenders 1 and 2 are primarily assigned to stopping any downfield handler movement. It is fine for the disc to swung,
as long as it is relatively flat.
to either side of the field.
1 and 2 will alternate taking the mark, and the closest handler look. However,
It is import for the non-mark not to over pursue any back field handler cuts.
As this puts greater pressure on the mid-field defenders, to help out with the additional handler, and stops them from cutting of the mid field throwing lanes.
It is more important not to give up an immediate or quick swing, otherwise our down field defenders won't have a chance to catch up.
The focus here should be on that continuation handler cut.
While the other defender catches up and places the mark. It is the middle wall who will come up with the big plays and create a turnover.
Let's recenter the disc and discuss the mid-field defender responsibilities.
The wall is responsible for cutting off the under lanes in the middle of the field.
In order to do so, it is important for the mid field defenders to operate as a wall.
As the cutters come in, so do the defenders. The outside wall defenders try and funnel the under cuts into the middle, so that the mid-mid can get a hand on the disc.
Meanwhile, the 2 downfield defenders are primarily responsible for taking away the deep looks.
Their primary concern is to stop the deep looks, which tend to come from the offensive wings along the side lines.
If the offense tries to flood the deep...
...the hope is that the wall will take away any lazer throws up the middle and the deeps have a chance to adjust to the disc. Worse case, the deep has to shade the force side and only a perfect throw to that break side will get through.
