Step by step 33 steps
  1. Step 1

Handlers are your primary throwers who stay up field with the disc and attempt to advance the disc downfield to cutters.

  2. Step 2

In this situation the defense is playing man coverage, forcing throws to the right side of the field. When the disc is in the middle of the field, it is risky to have a handler line up on the force side of the field.

  3. Step 3

This is because a veteran player will likely "poach" (like a hunter laying low) the throwing lane.

    12345671234567
  4. Step 4

If the handler doesn't see the defender slowing creep out of the corner of their eye, then it can lead to a turnover.

    12345671234567
  5. Step 5

If you notice that your defender is poaching, be sure to shout "poach" loud enough for your handler to hear it

    12345671234567
  6. Step 6

then drift into the back field for an easy swing.

  7. Step 7

Another alternative is to have two handlers on the break side.

    12345671234567
  8. Step 8

Handlers should wait for the primary cutters to initiate.

    12345671234567
  9. Step 9

After around a stall count of 4, if the disc hasn't advanced to a cutter, then the next look should be to hit a handler for a reset

    12345671234567
  10. Step 10

The closest handler has two main options, either to fake the strike...

  11. Step 11

    and take the dump

    or...

    and take the strike

    12345671234567
  15. Step 15

the furthest handler should be timing their cuts to follow

    12345671234567
  16. Step 16

so that the handler with the disc has at least two handler options before deciding if they need to punt it downfield

    12345671234567
  17. Step 17

By having both dump and strike looks, the person with the disc will have more options to break their mark

    12345671234567
  18. Step 18

Now, here are two things you want to avoid.

    12345671234567
  19. Step 19

The first is making your strike cut too early in the count or too far downfield, such that you are blocking your cutters and clogging the primary throwing lane. Give the cutters a chance to initiate, and make your strike cut flat.

    12345671234567
  20. Step 20

The second mistake is very common as well

    12345671234567
  21. Step 21

This involves the handler being too eager to cut for the dump and hanging out directly behind the handler

    12345671234567
  22. Step 22

if this happens to you, keep moving and clear out to the force side, allowing the next handler to make their move. Perhaps you will be open for the swing, but at the very least you give the next handler the option to cut dump or strike.

    12345671234567
  23. Step 23

If you make the mistake and hang out in the dump

    12345671234567
  24. Step 24

the defender will know that the other handler can only go strike, and take it away, as well as poach the lane.
