Zone defense. The goal is to force the disc to a sideline. This is the set up when the disc is in the middle. Deep-deep is behind everyone. The mids are all underneath. The two outside handle marks are pushed several yards upfield to deter any upfield throws. The middle handle mark is marking the disc FLAT. We want them to swing the disc.
The disc is swung. The handle mark on the side it is swung to busts his ass to cut off the around and force back to the middle. THIS MAN CANNOT GET BROKEN AROUND.
The center handle mark turns and face guards the middle handle completely denying the disc.
The far side handle mark positions himself to deter any crossfield hammers but also stays close enough so that if a big swing gets off that he will be able to get the mark on that handler.
The side mid closest to the disc pinches in to deny any underneaths.
The mid mid pushes in as well to deny any in underneath cuts. The far side mid pushes back to help out deep and deny any over the top throws.
The deep deep pushes towards the side of the field that the disc is on being sure to stay behind the cutters.
The disc is swung all the way across field.
The inverse of all of those steps happens. The close sideline handle mark busts it to force middle.
The mid handle mark goes man denial on the middle handle. He face guards the handle.
The far side handle mark pushes upfield slightly to deny over the tops but maintains a position to get the mark on a handler if it comes to his side.
The near side mid pushes in hard to deny any underneaths.
The mid mid shifts to the side of the field where the disc is and continues to stay underneath the cutters.
The far side mid pushes back to defend against deep cutters on that side and any hammers.
The deep deep moves to the side of the field where the disc is and maintains distance behind the cutter.
This pattern continues. Note that this zone is run either for a set number of throws (5-10 usually) or until around midfield. It is not a zone we will run all the way down the field.
