Set up for junk defense on a vertical stack Marks 1 + 2 man mark their handlers tightly - force is flick Mark 3 man marks front of stack tightly to stop reset/easy break Mark 4 is first man covering the under cuts on the open side - he will take any man coming into his space of the lane Mark 5 covers breakside undercuts and watches for overhead throws to offense 4/5/6 calling for a poach throw to them breakside Mark 6 is the second open side lane under cover and a transition between mark 4 and deep. Mark 7 is last man and takes anyone running deep.
Offense 5 makes an under cut to the open side - mark 4 picks him up
Offense 5 goes deep from his under cut - marks switch so that mark 6 is now responsible for a long up line throw, mark 4 covers anyone else making an in cut (offense 4)
If offense 5 keeps going deep er than mark 6, he is switched to mark 7 who will cover deep. Mark 6 remains alert for in cuts to the open lane from offense 6 or 7.
Offensive players clear back to the stack (in different order), junk defense resets to original position too.
Breakside cuts are covered by mark 5,
If breakside cut (offense 6) then cuts open side mark 5 leaves him to be picked up by our open side defenders (mark 4)
Offense 6 goes long and gets picked up by mark 7 - mark 6 is aware of throws to hit offense 6 in the transition space
Clever offenses will try and overload the lane defenders (mark 4 and 6) by using more than 2 players cutting at different angles into the lane (flatter and steeper). In this case we can let the disc move close to the sideline and set up again - the closer the disc is to being trapped on the sideline, the more effective poaching the lane is because breakside throws get harder.
Initial cover from that pass: Mark 4 becomes our force - forces are 50% of the defence at any point because they take away half of the pitch. HUGE job Mark 7 covers the quick deep shot to offense 6
Rest of offense join stack, with exception of offense 2 who remains as the other handler. Junk defense reset to original coverage - 2 on the under open lane, 1 deep, 1 breakside, 3 man marks
This defense can either be used to keep poaching the open lane for as long as possible, or as a transition defense. Is transition we will switch to tight man marking after a particular trigger: - numbers of passes - certain point on the field
