Step by step 12 steps
  1. Step 1

We are again set up in our side stack formation. Players 1, 2, and 3 act as handlers. Players 4 and 5 are downfield cutters. This animation shows what handler movement looks like on offense when we cannot progress upfield (for any reason, including, but not limited to, defensive pressure, throwing ability, poor timing, etc.). Here, Payer 1 has the disc. Player 2 is the "Primary Dump" (the first dump look) and Player 3 is the "Secondary Dump). Player 5 is the "Primary Cutter" and always initiates the cutting motion. Player 4, the "Secondary Cutter," generally cuts immediately after the Primary Cutter in the opposite direction.

  2. Step 2

The person with the disc should only look downfield for one or two seconds before "engaging" the Primary Dump. Engaging the primary dump involves squaring up with the dump and making eye contact. When the Primary dump is engaged, he/she can cut either upline or back. The Secondary Dump will make the opposite cut from the Primary Dump to create options.

  3. Step 3

Here the cutters are within the first 1-2 seconds of their cuts, but our primary cutter is properly defended and not open. The person with the disc engages the Primary Dump. At this point, the Primary cutter clears.

    1234512345
  4. Step 4

Here, the Primary Dump is setting up a cut to go upline by first cutting back and then angling sharply upline. The secondary cutter is engaged and preparing to cut in the opposite direction (backward). Downfield, the primary cutter is half way through clearing back to the side stack. The secondary cutter is making a jab step in to set up a deep cut.

    1234512345
  5. Step 5

Here, the primary Dump catches the disc upline. The Primary Dump has forward momentum and can use this momentum to hit Player 4 who is cutting deep. Player 5 has finished clearing to the side stack and should be setting up his/her next cut. The secondary Dump had just cut back to create a secondary option, but is now crowding the person with the disc. The two handlers must now PUSH to open spaces. This means that Player 1 will set up in a primary dump position and Player 3 will re position in the Secondary handler position.

  6. Step 6

The handlers have created space and are ready to re-engage if needed. Player 4 was not hit deep and plants to come underneath. Player 5, starts his/her cut.

    1234512345
  7. Step 7

For whatever reason, Player 4 is not open on any of his/her cuts! But, because he/she is a smart player, he/she clears back into the side stack. The person with the disc, having looked off Player 4, engaged the Primary Dump, who jab steps back and explodes upline. The secondary dump is also engaged and setting up the opposite cut. Player 5 is cutting and ready to plant and come under.

  8. Step 8

Here, the upline cut was properly defended, so the person with the disc throws to the secondary dump (this is called a "Swing"). After being looked off, the handler who is cutting upline must immediately clear to the Break side (this is an "elbow cut") and be ready for a second swing. Player 5 is making an in cut for Player 3.

    1234512345
  9. Step 9

Here Player 1 has cleared, making the "elbow cut". Player 4 is setting up his/her cut. Player 5 cleared.

    1234512345
  10. Step 10

Here, the disc is centered in the middle of the field. The handler cutting principals stay the same, however. If Player 4 is looked off again (poor thing!), then Player 3 must engage his/her primary dump (open side dump), Player 2. Player 2 decides to cut back and directly behind the player with the disc. Logically, our Secondary handler, Player 1 cuts upline (opposite of Player 2). Player 4 clears and Player 5 prepares to cut.

    1234512345
  11. Step 11

Here, the player with the disc hits his primary dump, who is now in a great position to BREAK and throw the disc to Player 4, who is clearing to the side stack again. Player 1 resets as primary dump and Player 3, who just threw the disc gets ready to set up as the secondary dump. Player 5 may cut in or out.

  12. Step 12

When Player 4 is looked off, the handlers reset and are ready to do it again.
