Step by step 8 steps
  1. Step 1

Ready for the pull...This will be a pull to the middle of the field.

  2. Step 2

Player 1 puts on a straight-up mark, forcing throws to the sidelines. 2 and 3 have two jobs. First, stop cuts into the middle. Second, work with 4 and 5 to sandwich the cutting pairs. Watch 7 to ensure that multiple deep cutters don't cause problems. 6 will help 2 and 3 shut down the middle, while watching for deeper over cuts. 7 will be watching for deep cuts, coming as shallow as the offense will allow. The idea is to force the offense into an easy throw toward the sidelines.

  3. Step 3

If the Offense moves the disc right to the sidelines, 3 will move toward the disc, while 5 will move to cut off the continuation, with support from 7, further downfield. 4 will then be responsible for the deep throws, unless the deep threat has 7 downfield, in which case, 4 would need to get to the opposite side, with clear communication with 7. 6 remains poached in the middle. 2 is watching for hammers, or swings across the field. 1 is taking out the dump pass, wherever it goes. IT IS VITAL TO STOP THE BREAK PASS, SO 6 MUST SUPPORT TO SHUT DOWN A PASS TO 6 OR 7.

  4. Step 4

Ideally, you have a sideline trap, with 3 providing the mark, 5 stopping downfield throws to the middle, and 1 chasing the dump. 2 is covering the middle, while watching for a break swing. 6 is also in the middle, watching for a hammer or break to 5. 4 is covering deep strikes. You can decide whether to worry about the hammer to 4 as a threat, or to stick to the curling, outside-in upfield huck

  5. Step 5

    Reset to last step...

    12345671234567
  6. Step 6

Bad situation 1. 3 cannot get across in time to prevent a break throw, and 6 cannot defend it. 5 is also slow, or the throw gets between 3 and 5. The defense is broken, reset to man, called by 4 and/or 7. 6 should take a quick look, and if possible, provide a straight up, no huck mark for a count of 2 or 3, and either back away to find a new mark, or stay on the thrower. If not, 6 must get the deepest threat possible.

  7. Step 7

Another reset, to show another bad situation.

  8. Step 8

Probably the easiest break of this defense. 5 moved in without shutting down the upfield throw, and the outside in downline throw got past. 7 needs to be watching for it, but was unable to shut it down. If this happens, 7 needs to call out for a man defense immediately. 7 also must get deep, to the deepest threat on that side. If no one is deeper on that side, he can mark the disc, probably forcing to the sideline. Call out the force if you can.
