Disc starts on the break sideline. We allow horizontal passes towards the force sideline and pressure the breaks and yard gains. Note that Defender #2 could bid on a break pass to Cutter #1 or #2, Defender #3 is doing the same on Cutters #2 and #4, Defender #4 is doing the same on Cutter #4 and the far swing handler. The least dangerous throw to the near handler is not guarded whatsoever.
The disc begins to swing and the defense adjusts gradually to close down dangerous options. Again we completely allow the force side handler to get the disc. Notice that the cup is moving as a single unit and not immediately committing to #6. This handler often gets rid of the disc quickly, and a break throw back to #5 would make for an easy continuation to cutter #1. By moving gradually we discourage this quick option without giving up anything dangerous downfield.
As the cup settles onto handler #6, he swings it into the force sideline. The mids are still playing underneath their cutters so this player has no immediate options. Note that the break side mid is now cheating in, because direct throws to cutters #1 or #2 are very unlikely. Discouraging the big swing to handler #5 becomes important here, because nobody else will be in a position to cover that throw. The cup is going to set a trap.
The top of the cup (defender #6) sets the mark and defender #5 doesn't leave the player who released this pass. By having a man marking this thrower immediately and playing man defense, handler #7 no longer has an easy option. All downfield defenders cheat in to pressure easy throws and try to force a bad decision. Note that the force side mid (defender #4) is now acting as a 3rd member of the cup, unless the offense changes their positioning somehow.
The marked handler makes a good cut and lets the offense break out of the trap to handler #5. The defense now has to recover as quickly as possible. The mids will quickly react to any continuation cutters available and try to take them away as the cup gets back into position.
Movement of the cup broken down en route to the disc
Defender #5 returns to his job as the mark after #6 and #7 briefly covered to allow him to recover from the previous play.
